Crest Coach Roy Kirby Steps Down

Article: Emily Killian / Shelby Star

Crest High School's head football coach, Roy Kirby, is leaving the school for a high school in South Carolina, school officials confirmed Thursday morning.

His team made it into the state playoffs this year, and Kirby was nominated for Cleveland County's Coach of the Decade contest. He led a team to back-to-back state championships in 2003 and 2004.

He is going to Dutch Fork High School near Columbia, S.C.

The announcement closes a 13-year reign as the Chargers’ head coach in which he compiled a 123-51 record, the two state championships, seven conference crowns and an amazing 32-7 record against Cleveland County opposition. He was also the defensive coordinator for two state championship teams at Crest before he took over head coaching duties from Mike Stewart in 1997.

During his tenure as head coach, more than 40 Charger players went on to play at the college level and 13 were Shrine Bowl selections.
